Sodium‐glucose cotransporter‐2 (SGLT‐2) inhibitors in patients with type 2 diabetes: Barriers and solutions for improving uptake in routine clinical practice

The benefits of SGLT2 inhibitors, including cardiovascular and renal protection, have recently been highlighted in type 2 diabetes (T2D) research. However, in patients with T2D, particularly in subpopulations most likely to benefit from these medicines, adoption rates are still low. The potential challenges to prescribing SGLT2 inhibitors in T2D in clinical practise are discussed in this paper, as well as possible multidisciplinary recommendations to overcome these barriers. From the clinicians' perspective, safety concerns and a lack of clarity in and divergence of guidelines regarding the introduction of SGLT2 inhibitors into therapy regimens may be a hurdle to acceptance.
