This study aimed to determine if individuals with overweight or obesity have higher levels of certain glucose carriers in the duodenum. The study found that those with overweight or obesity had progressively increased levels of sodium-glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT-1) and glucose transporter 5 (GLUT-5) compared to the lean group. There were no differences in levels of glucose transporter 2 (GLUT-2) between the three groups. The study also found that SGLT-1 and GLUT-5 levels were positively correlated with BMI, waist circumference, glucose and insulin levels. Intestinal GLUT-5 levels were also positively correlated with uric acid concentrations, a product of fructose metabolism involved in the pathogenesis of obesity. These findings suggest that those with overweight or obesity have enhanced SGLT-1 and GLUT-5 levels in the duodenum, which may contribute to postprandial glucose concentrations, insulin resistance, and hyperinsulinemia.
