Salmonella enterica, a disease-causing bacterium, has been found to employ strategies to evade the human body's defense mechanisms, according to a study by researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The study reveals that Salmonella uses a protein called SopB to protect itself by preventing the fusion of Salmonella-containing vacuoles (SCVs) with lysosomes and inhibiting lysosome production. The protein also hinders Transcription Factor EB (TFEB) translocation, a molecule crucial for lysosome production. The researchers propose using inhibitors against SopB or activators of TFEB as potential approaches to combat Salmonella infection.
