Steatotic Liver Disease Linked to Reduced Cardiopulmonary Fitness

In a study of 2722 Framingham Heart Study participants, hepatic steatosis and fibrosis were associated with impaired cardiopulmonary fitness (CRF), measured by peak VO2, even after adjusting for BMI and cardiometabolic risk factors. Metabolomic analysis revealed shared pathways between liver dysfunction and CRF impairment, with metabolites mediating up to 74% of these associations. Findings highlight altered lipid metabolism and cardiometabolic risk as potential therapeutic targets for reducing cardiovascular risk in SLD.
