Study Explores Link Between Metabolic Syndrome and Apical Periodontitis

A study involving 28 male Wistar rats investigated the bidirectional relationship between fructose-induced metabolic syndrome (MS) and apical periodontitis (AP). Groups consuming fructose showed increased body mass, blood glucose, and liver and visceral fat weight, indicating MS development. Metabolomic analysis revealed increased glucose, histidine, lactate, fatty acids, and phenylalanine in the FRUT+AP group. While MS did not affect AP progression, histopathological analysis revealed significant systemic effects from AP, including liver and kidney tissue alterations, and changes in metabolite levels.
