Study Finds Link Between Low Muscle Strength and Increased Risk of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease

A study in Korea involving 31,649 participants aged 2-19 years explores the link between muscle strength and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). The study, conducted from 2015 to 2018, reveals a significant association. Those with lower muscle strength had a 1.92-fold and 3.12-fold higher risk of MAFLD compared to higher strength quartiles. This correlation remained consistent across genders, ages, and health conditions like obesity and diabetes. Additionally, lower muscle strength was linked to increased odds of severe liver fibrosis in MAFLD patients. The findings emphasize the importance of muscle strength in MAFLD risk.
