
The study evaluated gingival vascular response to mechanical compression during inflammation using ultrasonography in 8 Sinclair mini pigs (4 male, 4 female) aged 18 months. Pathogenic bacteria-impregnated silk ligatures were placed on select teeth at 2-week intervals. Ultrasonographic imaging assessed blood flow and gel pad strain over 10 weeks. Male pigs exhibited significant increases in gel pad strain during weeks 2, 4, and 6 in all teeth regions and week 8 for PM4 and M1 regions, indicating increased gingival blood flow. Female pigs showed a significant strain increase only in week 4 for PM4. These findings suggest sex-based differences in gingival vascular response, with males showing greater blood flow changes than females during inflammation.
