Study Highlights Need for Better TMD Treatment Collaboration

A study assessed dentist support for temporomandibular disorder (TMD) treatment and inter-professional collaboration with physiotherapists. Analyzing 420 responses from January to April 2023, the study found that 84% of dentists focused on correcting dental occlusion as the first-line treatment. Referral to physiotherapists was reported by 57% of respondents and was the second most common treatment approach. The main barrier to referral was a need for more awareness of physiotherapy's role in TMD management. Despite this, 70% of dental practitioners expressed interest in enhancing inter-professional collaboration and pursuing postgraduate training. The study underscores the need to improve collaborative efforts in TMD management.
