Study Identifies Causes and Demographics of Visual Disability Applications

Retinitis pigmentosa is the leading cause of visual impairment (VI) in a Karnataka hospital cohort, with 60.8% male applicants. Among 194 disability applications, most were from those aged 35-60. Nearly 29% of cases were preventable, particularly in children under 18. This study underscores the burden of visual impairment and informs local and national intervention strategies to address eye disease trends and improve disability certification processes.
