Study Links Sugar-Sweetened Beverages to Higher Risk of Kidney Disease

A study investigated the relationship between the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, artificially sweetened beverages, and natural juices with the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study found that consuming more than one serving per day of sugar-sweetened beverages or artificially sweetened beverages was associated with a higher risk of incident CKD. Substituting sugar-sweetened drinks with water or natural juice and artificially sweetened beverages with water or natural juice was linked to a reduced risk of CKD. These findings suggest that reducing the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages or artificially sweetened beverages may help lower the risk of developing CKD.
