A study from the nuMoM2b Heart Health investigated the link between obesity, adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs), and postpartum cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Analyzing data from 4216 participants, they found that early pregnancy obesity was significantly associated with higher rates of postpartum hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes. APOs, like hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, were also linked to increased postpartum hypertension and hyperlipidemia. However, these outcomes only minimally mediated the relationship between obesity and CVD risk factors, indicating that APOs might indicate pre-pregnancy CVD risk rather than directly causing postpartum CVD.
