Study Reveals Anaemia Prevalence and Screening Gaps in population

A cohort study assessed the prevalence of anaemia and screening practices for common underlying causes in the healthcare system. Analyzing data from 112,181 adult patients, anaemia prevalence was 12.0%, higher in women and associated with age and kidney function decline. Within a 3-month follow-up, screening rates for iron, vitamin B12, and folate deficiencies were low. Among screened patients, iron deficiency was prevalent in 37.0%, while B12 and folate deficiencies were found in 6.3% and 5.8%, respectively. The study underscores the substantial burden of anaemia, especially in older patients and those with advanced kidney disease, highlighting the need for improved screening practices to optimize patient care.
