OPHTHALMOLOGY

In a seven-year retrospective study analyzing Wolfring gland ductal cysts (WGDCs), forty-eight patients (48 eyelids) were assessed for clinicopathological features and surgical outcomes. Predominantly presenting with painless eyelid swelling (81.3%), the median symptom duration was 11.5 months. Most cysts (93.8%) appeared bluish-grey and transilluminate, with a median size of 22 mm. The upper eyelid was predominantly affected (64.6%), mainly in medial or centromedial locations. Chronic trachoma signs were evident in 79.2% of patients. Transcutaneous excision was found to be more effective with fewer complications than the transconjunctival method.

An experimental triple antibiotic paste containing nitrofurantoin, ciprofloxacin, and metronidazole showed better cytocompatibility than conventional Hoshino antibiotic pastes and calcium hydroxide in human dental pulp stem cells. The paste maintained about 75% metabolic activity and better preserved cell viability, supporting further investigation as a medicament for regenerative endodontic procedures.

A retrospective cohort of 360 adults with HFrEF and stage 3–4 CKD found that sacubitril/valsartan was generally well tolerated over 24 months. Mean eGFR remained stable among survivors, while NT-proBNP, CRP and NYHA class improved. The renal composite occurred in 3.3% and mortality was 6.1%. As a single-arm study, the findings are descriptive and require controlled confirmation.

A US retrospective cohort study of 4,846 adults with obesity and asthma found that GLP-1-based therapy was associated with fewer one-year asthma exacerbations than non-GLP-1 weight-management therapy. Exacerbations occurred in 1.7% vs 4.0%, alongside lower glucocorticoid exposure, emergency/critical-care use, and acute respiratory failure. Residual confounding prevents causal conclusions.

Differences in fat distribution, inflammation, metabolism, and muscle function can produce distinct cardiometabolic risks despite similar BMI. The findings support phenotype-informed risk assessment and personalized prevention and treatment.

Nearly half of eyes achieved the primary effectiveness outcome, with no intraoperative complications or unexpected safety findings.
