Study Reveals Complex Link Between Sjogren's Syndrome and the Oral Microbiome

A new review delves into the intricate relationship between Sjogren's syndrome (SS) and the diverse oral microbiome. While there's no distinct microbiome pattern in SS due to its varied manifestations, salivary secretion rates, and risk factors, Gram‐positive species are more abundant in the oral niches of affected individuals. These findings suggest the resilience of such bacteria in the dry oral environment. Reduced salivary flow isn't the sole cause of microbial imbalance but plays a role in host-associated risk factors. The study highlights the need for further research to decipher the microbiome's role in SS's development.
