Study Reveals High Prevalence of Anxiety and Depression in Adolescents with Juvenile Arthritis

A study investigated the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms among adolescents and young adults (AYA) with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Screening 1,150 AYA patients, it found 32.7% exhibited noticeable mental health issues, with 30.4% reporting clinically relevant suicidal or self-harm thoughts. Approximately 19% showed moderate to severe depressive or anxious symptoms. Factors associated with conspicuous screening results included older age, female gender, higher disease activity, increased functional limitations, and poorer subjective health status. Notably, regular sports participation correlated with lower likelihood of noticeable mental health issues. These findings underscore the importance of routine screening for early detection and management of mental health problems in AYA with JIA.
