A recent prospective cohort study encompassing 10 hospitals in New Zealand explored the prevalence and risk factors associated with concurrent gestational diabetes mellitus and mental disorders in pregnant women. Of the 414 respondents, 17% reported anxiety, 16% vulnerability to depression, and 27% experienced poor mental health-related quality of life at the time of gestational diabetes diagnosis. Factors such as younger maternal age, Pacific ethnicity, a history of gestational diabetes, and older gestational age at diagnosis were linked to poorer mental health outcomes. The study highlights the need for targeted support for at-risk individuals during pregnancy.
