'Brain fog,' a prevalent cognitive issue post-COVID, including attention and memory problems, is now linked to blood clotting. A recent study reveals that two blood proteins, fibrinogen and d-dimer, known for their clotting roles, can predict cognitive deficits six and twelve months after COVID-19 hospitalization. Elevated fibrinogen levels were associated with subjective and objective cognitive deficits at 6 and 12 months after COVID-19. Higher d-dimer levels were also linked to subjective cognitive deficits and occupational impacts, raising concerns about long-term cognitive effects following infection.
