The systematic review investigates the association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and edentulism, a condition marked by complete tooth loss. A comprehensive literature search following PRISMA guidelines identified 23 relevant clinical studies published between 1999 and 2023, all supporting a positive association between edentulism and OSA. Findings indicate that tooth loss may cause anatomic changes that worsen breathing, with mean Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) scores found to be two to three times higher in edentulous individuals than in those with teeth. The severity of OSA appeared linked to the extent and duration of edentulism, though data on denture use during sleep remains inconclusive. These results underscore a need for further clinical research to solidify understanding of this potential risk factor for OSA.
