A study analyzing 419 elderly hip fracture patients and 166 individuals undergoing routine health exams discovered higher incidence rates of preoperative hyponatremia in hip fracture cases, particularly among those with intertrochanteric fractures. The severity of hyponatremia increased with age, emphasizing the need for sodium supplementation and clinical vigilance in this demographic. Addressing hyponatremia may serve as a preventive measure against hip fractures in the elderly.
