Study Reveals Strong Link Between Low Lung Function and Cardiovascular Risk in Mid-Adulthood, Particularly in Women

A recent study delves into the poorly understood link between impaired lung function and cardiovascular mortality. The study examined a diverse cohort of 863 individuals aged 45, and utilized spirometry and cardiovascular risk algorithms to uncover associations. Low lung volumes were consistently linked to elevated cardiovascular risk, particularly in women, irrespective of smoking history or obesity. Notably, this correlation persisted in non-smokers and was unaffected by airway or gas transfer measures. These findings highlight the importance of lung health in mid-adulthood and its impact on cardiovascular well-being, emphasizing gender-specific nuances.
