A recent study in the United States, utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2005 to 2008, explored the link between refractive error and diabetic retinopathy (DR) across different racial groups. The study, encompassing 1317 participants, revealed that individuals with high myopia exhibited a reduced risk of diabetic retinopathy, as indicated by an odds ratio of 0.44 (95% CI: 0.20–0.96, P-value = 0.040) in multivariate regression analysis. Notably, subgroup analysis disclosed a significant association in the non-Hispanic Black group, emphasizing the nuanced relationship between refractive errors and diabetic retinopathy in diverse populations.
