Study Reveals T1 Hypointense Brain Lesions Linked to Higher Disability in Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder

A recent study investigated the impact of T1 hypointense brain lesions on patients with Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD). The study examined 83 NMOSD patients, analyzing Aquaporin-4 levels, Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), and MRI findings. Results revealed 22 patients with T1 hypointense lesions, showing significantly higher EDSS scores compared to those without (p=0.01). Moreover, patients with over four T1 lesions exhibited EDSS scores ≥4. T2/FLAIR hyperintense lesions also correlated with higher EDSS scores (p=0.01). Positive AQP-4 did not correlate with T1 hypointensity (p=0.8). This study underscores the association between T1 hypointense lesions and increased disability in NMOSD patients.
