A study determined the Population Attributable Fraction of Death from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (PAFARDS) in hyperinflammatory and hyperinflammatory sepsis, and to identify the primary cause of death within each phenotype was conducted. The study utilized data from 1737 sepsis patients across two prospective cohorts. Results indicated PAFARDS of 19% in hypoinflammatory sepsis and 14% in hyperinflammatory sepsis, with differing primary causes of death observed between phenotypes. This study underscores the challenges in designing future clinical trials targeting mortality outcomes in sepsis and ARDS patients.
