Study Shows Elevated Mortality Risk in Children Experiencing Critical Events Within 48 Hours of PICU Transfer

In a retrospective study spanning two tertiary-care academic hospitals, the association between critical events (CEs), such as mechanical ventilation (MV) or vasoactive infusion (VI) within 48 hours of pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) transfer from the ward or emergency department (ED), and in-hospital mortality was investigated. Adjusting for variables including age, gender, hospital, and comorbidities, experiencing a CE within this timeframe was linked to a heightened mortality risk (OR 12.40 [95% CI: 8.12-19.23, P <0.05]). Notably, the risk was most pronounced within the initial 12 hours but persisted through the subsequent 12-48 hour interval. The findings suggest the potential utility of CEs within 48 hours of PICU transfer as an assessment metric for quality improvement initiatives.
