Study Suggests Corticosteroids May Offer Cognitive Benefits in Rare Epileptic Syndrome

A recent multicenter, randomized controlled trial across seven European countries compared the cognitive outcomes of children with the rare syndrome Epileptic Encephalopathy with Spike-Wave Activation in Sleep (EE-SWAS) after six months of treatment with either corticosteroids or clobazam. Despite premature termination due to enrollment challenges, the study suggested a potential improvement in IQ outcomes with corticosteroids over clobazam. Adverse events were comparable between the two groups. While caution is advised in interpreting findings, the data supports the potential early use of corticosteroids in EE-SWAS, aligning with previous uncontrolled studies.
