Subgingival microbiome at different levels of cognition

The article discusses the association between oral health and cognitive decline and describes a study of the subgingival microbiota composition in two cohorts of participants. The study found that microbial diversities only tended to differ between cognitive categories, with increased probing pocket depth and the presence of caries as the strongest determinants. However, the abundances of 101 taxa were associated with a cognitive score, and after adjusting for various factors, only eight taxa remained significant. Lachnospiraceae [XIV] was found to increase with decreasing cognitive scores. The study suggests that cognitive decline is associated with changes in oral microbiota composition and highlights the importance of good oral healthcare practices for older adults.
