Supervised exercise training in patients with advanced heart failure and left ventricular assist device

A recent study on patients with advanced heart failure and left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) revealed that supervised exercise training for 12 weeks did not significantly improve peak oxygen consumption (peakVO2). However, it positively impacted submaximal exercise capacity and physical quality of life. The multicenter trial included 64 patients, primarily male, with a mean age of 56. While peakVO2 didn't change significantly, the intervention group showed a notable increase in 6-minute walk distance and the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire physical domain score. Adherence to the exercise program was high, and no adverse events were reported.
