Supportive managers key to reducing use of physical restraints in nursing homes

Physical restraints in care homes can be reduced by 14% through organizational interventions. Empowering frontline staff with supportive managers reduces reliance on restrictive devices without increasing falls or injuries among residents. The study, analyzing 11 trials with 19,003 participants, advocates organizational changes for long-term effects. Prescribing psychotropic medications did not increase. Implementing such interventions may reduce restraint use from 274 to 236 residents per 1000 individuals in nursing homes.
