Supramolecular Salicylic Acid and Zinc Pyrithione Show Promise for Scalp Seborrheic Dermatitis

Scalp seborrheic dermatitis (SD), linked to sebum production and scalp barrier function, may benefit from targeted treatments. This study assessed the impact of a 2% supramolecular salicylic acid (SSA) and 0.8% zinc pyrithione (ZP) conditioner in five patients with mild to moderate SD over two weeks. Findings revealed significant reductions in flaking, sebum levels, and fungal count, along with improved scalp barrier measures like transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and pH. No adverse effects were reported, positioning SSA-ZP as a promising first-line option for SD. Further large-scale studies are needed to confirm these initial results.
