Surgical education in urogynecology from low fidelity to virtual reality: Systematic review

This study aimed to evaluate and enhance the availability of educational tools in urogynecology. A systematic review covered literature from 1946 to 2023, identifying 97 educational interventions, including manuscripts and conference abstracts. Six categories emerged: didactics, animal models, cadavers, static models, extended reality (XR), and multimodal workshops. Despite varying quality, these tools improved learning outcomes and participant confidence in pelvic anatomy, surgical techniques, and disease management. Notably, only a minority of interventions became widely accessible, indicating a need for better dissemination. While all modalities enhanced urogynecologic surgery education, few achieved broad dissemination, and long-term retention assessment was limited.
