A recent study examined the impact of patellar instability on competitive wrestlers and the outcomes of patellofemoral stabilization surgery (PFSS). The study included 56 wrestlers who underwent PFSS between 2000 and 2020. Results showed that 55.3% of wrestlers returned to wrestling within an average of 8.8 months after surgery. Different types of PFSS did not significantly affect the return rate or patient-reported outcomes. The most common postoperative complication was recurrent patellar instability (21.0%). The study suggested that medial patellofemoral (MPFL) reconstruction had the lowest rates of recurrent instability and surgical failure, making it a more durable surgical option for wrestlers.
