Survey Finds Varied Nutrition Labeling for Sodium, Potassium, and Phosphorus in Packaged Foods

This study assessed nutrition labeling in a Malaysian supermarket for sodium, potassium, and phosphorus content crucial for chronic kidney disease management. Out of 2,577 products surveyed, sodium information was available in 79.4% of nutrition fact panels, while potassium and phosphorus were disclosed in only 11.7% and 2.0%, respectively. Sodium-containing additives were common (78.6%), with potassium (28.5%) and phosphorus (46.9%) additives less frequently listed. Imported products included more sodium and phosphorus information than locally manufactured ones. These findings highlight the need for improved nutrition labeling to aid dietary choices for chronic kidney disease patients.
