The SWELE program integrates unstructured outdoor play with mindfulness-based interventions to improve mental wellbeing among children and adolescents with special educational needs (SEN) in Hong Kong. This 16-week program includes training workshops for teachers, principals, parents, and student ambassadors, and 45–60 minute unstructured play sessions fostering exploration and creativity. Using a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, the program evaluates changes in mood, anxiety, social skills, and playfulness through pre- and post-tests and focus group discussions. The results aim to confirm the program's efficacy in enhancing mental wellbeing in SEN students.
