Tarsal Navicular Bone Stress Injuries: A Multicenter Case Series Investigating Clinical Presentation, Diagnostic Approach, Treatment, and Return to Sport in Adolescent Athletes

This study investigated tarsal navicular bone stress injuries (BSIs) in adolescent athletes. The researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of patients aged 10 to 19 years with radiographically diagnosed tarsal navicular BSIs. Among the 110 patients analyzed, the majority were female and engaged in sports such as cross-country/track and field or gymnastics/dance. Nonoperative treatment involving protected weight-bearing and a protective boot or cast was successful in 85% of cases. Surgical intervention was pursued for 15% of patients and was associated with longer recovery times. Postoperative complications were minimal. Understanding the signs, symptoms, and diagnostic imaging of navicular BSIs may lead to earlier detection and improved outcomes in adolescents.
