Examining the association between prior mental health and addiction (MHA) service use and post-release recidivism, this Canadian Journal of Psychiatry study analyzed 45,890 individuals in provincial correctional institutions in 2010. It found moderate associations between prior MHA service use and recidivism, particularly highlighting stronger links with addiction service use than mental health service use. Despite the high risk of post-release mental health and addiction utilization, the research exposed insufficient access to outpatient MHA care, emphasizing the critical need for improved care integration in correctional facilities.
