This review explores the bidirectional association between atrial fibrillation (AF) and myocardial infarction (MI), which involves shared risk factors and various mechanisms such as inflammation and left ventricular remodeling. Having both conditions increases the risk of stroke, heart failure, and death. The article summarizes current data and guidelines on the prevention and management of both conditions, identifies gaps in the literature, and proposes directions for future research. It also includes a summary of methodological approaches for studying bidirectional associations in population-based studies.
