The chronic alcohol consumption influences the gonadal axis in men

A meta-analysis of 21 studies involving 10,199 adult men has revealed that chronic alcohol consumption leads to a significant decrease in total testosterone levels, free testosterone, and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). Additionally, alcohol intake is linked to an increase in estradiol levels while having a neutral effect on luteinizing hormone (LH). These effects were observed in healthy men but not in those with alcohol use disorder or after acute alcohol intake. The study underscores the potential inhibition of the gonadal axis by chronic alcohol consumption, although the precise mechanisms connecting alcohol exposure to steroidogenesis remain unclear.
