A study examined the effects of early oral nutritional supplements (ONS) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). In a sample of 161 patients, those in the Early ONS group (72 patients) exhibited significant benefits. Early ONS was identified as an independent protective factor for concurrent chemotherapy cycles, and it reduced the risk of radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) and excessive weight loss. Notably, in stage III-IVA patients, early ONS significantly decreased the risk of severe malnutrition. Overall, the study concludes that early ONS can effectively improve nutritional outcomes, reduce RIOM, and enhance treatment adherence in NPC patients undergoing CCRT.
