A new study shows how a promising COVID-19 drug, nirmatrelvir/ritonavir, works in elderly patients. Researchers found that age, disease severity, and specific blood markers significantly impact the drug's effectiveness. The study results showed that older patients, those with more severe illness, and individuals with specific blood markers like bilirubin and cholesterol responded less to the drug. However, clinical classification of disease severity emerged as the most critical factor influencing treatment success. This research suggests that personalized treatment approaches, considering age, disease severity, and blood markers, may be crucial for optimizing nirmatrelvir/ritonavir's effectiveness in elderly COVID patients.
