This study investigated the impact of maternal HIV on perinatal mortality in a hospital in Ethiopia. The study enrolled 3,525 birthing women, including 1,175 cases and 2,350 controls, and found that perinatal mortality was lower among HIV-positive women. The protective effect of HIV on perinatal mortality remained after adjusting for potential confounders. Among HIV-negative women, access to antenatal care (ANC) for those from rural areas was almost half, whereas in HIV-positive women, no differences were noted. The study concludes that integrating ANC and HIV services can promote access to healthcare, reduce inequalities, and improve neonatal mortality.
