New York State's ISTOP program effectively decreased postoperative narcotic prescriptions after facial plastic reconstructive surgeries at an academic institution. The study used CPT codes to analyze the impact of e-prescribing requirements on narcotic dispersion. From 2014 to 2018, 76.1% of patients received post-surgery narcotics. ISTOP implementation led to a 42.8% decrease in prescriptions, though opioids remain an option when clinically suitable.
