The impact of anticholinergics on cognitive function in patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction

A study explores the link between anticholinergic drugs and cognitive changes in patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD), common in conditions like spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and dementia. Studies show prolonged use (> 90 days) of these medications, particularly oxybutynin and tolterodine, is associated with cognitive impairment in NLUTD patients. However, newer drugs like solifenacin and fesoterodine/oxybutynin seem safer, with no significant cognitive impact observed in children with spina bifida. Further research is needed to confirm cognitive safety, especially given NLUTD patients' high exposure to these drugs.
