The study aimed to calculate the personal financial costs and investigate the impact on quality of life and pain-related disability of dental conditions that require urgent dental attendance. Data were collected from 714 participants across North-East England who presented with urgent dental conditions to an out-of-hours dental service, a dental emergency clinic, and five general dental practices. The study found that diseases of the pulp and associated periapical disease were the most common reason for urgent dental attendance and had the most significant impact on oral health-related quality of life and pain-related disability. The mean personal financial cost of urgent dental care was £85.81, and there were significant differences in costs between patients attending different types of dental services. The study highlights the significant personal financial burden and impact on quality of life associated with urgent dental conditions.

An experimental triple antibiotic paste containing nitrofurantoin, ciprofloxacin, and metronidazole showed better cytocompatibility than conventional Hoshino antibiotic pastes and calcium hydroxide in human dental pulp stem cells. The paste maintained about 75% metabolic activity and better preserved cell viability, supporting further investigation as a medicament for regenerative endodontic procedures.

As a single-arm study, the findings are descriptive and require controlled confirmation.

The findings support phenotype-informed risk assessment and personalized prevention and treatment.
