A study investigated the impact of body mass index (BMI) on obstructive airway disease (OAD) in children with sickle cell disease (C-SCD) compared to asthmatic children. Using impulse oscillometry (IOS), researchers found that BMI correlated with increased total and central airway resistance in C-SCD, indicating a significant association with OAD. Conversely, BMI did not significantly affect airway resistance in asthmatic children. Additionally, C-SCD exhibited higher airway resistance and reactance than asthmatics, suggesting more severe OAD. These findings emphasize the importance of addressing obesity-related factors in managing respiratory health in C-SCD.
