The study aimed to clarify the expression of the Maelstrom spermatogenic transposon silencer (MAEL) in human spermatogenesis and its role in sperm function. The study found that MAEL was abundant in spermatids and spermatozoa of the human testis and located in the mitochondria of ejaculated sperm. MAEL was found to bind with GPX4 and UBL4B, and its loss induced mitochondrial dysfunction. The study also found a positive correlation between MAEL protein levels and total motile sperm count, highlighting the potential role of MAEL in the causes of asthenozoospermia.
