The Minimal Clinically Important Difference Changes Greatly Based on the Different Calculation Methods

The article discusses the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and the different calculation methods used to determine the threshold values. The study used a cohort of 312 patients with knee osteoarthritis who were treated with intra-articular platelet-rich plasma. The MCID values were calculated using both anchor-based and distribution-based approaches and resulted in values ranging from 1.8 to 25.9 points. The study showed that the different methods led to highly heterogeneous values, which significantly affect the percentage of patients achieving the MCID in a given population, making it difficult to evaluate the real effectiveness of a given treatment.
