The Power of Branched-Chain Amino Acids: How They Transform Liver Health

The study investigated the effects of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation on hepatic oxidative function and de novo lipogenesis. Mice were fed different diets, and their hepatic metabolism was analyzed. The results showed that BCAA supplementation improved the induction of hepatic lipid oxidation and ketogenesis in insulin-sensitive livers while reducing the rates of hepatic de novo lipogenesis. This effect was independent of BCAA being anaplerotic substrates for the mitochondria. Additionally, BCAA supplementation led to a higher mitochondrial NADH/NAD+ ratio and higher fed-to-fasting phosphorylation of AMPKα and ACC, providing a favorable biochemical environment for flux through β-oxidation and lower de novo lipogenesis. These findings suggest that BCAA supplementation may be beneficial in improving hepatic oxidative function and reducing de novo lipogenesis.
