The predictive usefulness of the novel “combined hemoglobin‐to‐platelet ratio and maximum mouth opening index” on prevalence of radiation induced trismus in patients with nasopharyngeal cancer

This study aimed to determine the predictive value of a unique combination of hemoglobin-to-platelet ratio (HPR) and maximum mouth opening (MMO) for radiation-induced trismus (RIT) in patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LA-NPC). The data of 198 patients were analyzed retrospectively, and four groups were formed based on HPR and MMO cutoff values. The RIT rates for these groups were 10.2%, 15.2%, 25%, and 59.4%, respectively. Groups 2 and 3 were merged to create the HPR-MMO index, which classified patients into low-risk (HPR > 0.54 and MMO > 40.7 mm), intermediate-risk (HPR ≤ 0.54 but MMO > 40.7 mm or HPR > 0.54 but MMO ≤ 40.7 mm), and high-risk (HPR ≤ 0.54 and MMO ≤ 40.7 mm) groups, with RIT rates of 10.2%, 19.2%, and 59.4% respectively. The HPR-MMO index shows promise in classifying LA-NPC patients into different risk groups for RIT.
