The societal costs and health impacts on obesity of BMI report cards in US schools

A recent study has found that school-based BMI report cards, a popular program for preventing childhood obesity in the US, are not cost-effective. The program involves reporting student BMI to parents/guardians along with nutrition and physical activity resources. The study estimated that implementing BMI report cards in 15 states from 2023 to 2032 would reach approximately 8.3 million children with overweight or obesity. However, the program was not projected to prevent any cases of childhood obesity or significantly reduce its prevalence. The estimated cost of the program over ten years was $210 million. The study suggests considering deimplementation to allocate resources to more effective interventions.
