The sodium‐glucose cotransporter‐2 inhibitor canagliflozin does not increase risk of non‐genital skin and soft tissue infections in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A pooled post hoc analysis from the CANVAS Program and CREDENCE randomized double‐blind trials

Researchers conducted a post hoc analysis of two trials to investigate whether the use of canagliflozin, a sodium‐glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, affects the risk of non-genital skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) in people with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk and/or chronic kidney disease. The study found that there was no significant difference in the rates of non-genital SSTIs between participants taking canagliflozin and those taking a placebo. The risk of recurrent events and non-genital fungal infections also showed no significant difference between the two groups. Factors associated with non-genital SSTIs included age, gender, body mass index, glycated hemoglobin levels, kidney function, peripheral vascular disease, and neuropathy. These findings suggest that canagliflozin does not have a meaningful impact on the risk of non-genital SSTIs or non-genital fungal SSTIs.
